Green Mountain Energy Expands Service
Pittsburgh, PA, March 28, 2013 -- Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation's longest serving renewable energy retailer, today announced it is now offering service to residential and business customers in greater Pittsburgh. Green Mountain offers renewable energy in competitive markets across the nation including other parts of Pennsylvania such as Philadelphia.
"We recognize cleaner sources of energy are vital to creating a more sustainable city and welcome Green Mountain's leadership in renewable energy," said Aftyn Giles, Sustainability Coordinator for the Mayor's Office of Sustainability and Energy Efficiency.
With more than 15 years of dedication to renewable energy, Green Mountain is uniquely positioned to offer local residents and businesses a variety of cleaner electricity service options from a reliable and experienced green power provider.
"Green Mountain has been supplying renewable energy to consumers longer than any other company in the nation," said Zac Lowder, Manager, Pennsylvania Energy Market of Green Mountain Energy Company. "Expanding into Pittsburgh is a natural fit for us, as there is already a clear passion for sustainability and renewable energy. We are excited to support this community with renewable energy and take part in local events and join forces with organizations that benefit the environment."
Turning the Steel City into a Green City
To celebrate its expansion into Duquesne Light service territory, Green Mountain is supporting a variety of local efforts in the community:
For the next year, Green Mountain is donating one tree to the Plant One Million program for each new residential customer that makes the switch to renewable energy. Plant One Million is an ambitious multi-state tree-planting campaign, encompassing 13 counties in southern Pennsylvania and parts of New Jersey and Delaware.
Additionally, Green Mountain will be teaming up with the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon (May 5, 2013) and the Mayor's Office of Sustainability and Energy Efficiency to minimize the race's environmental impact by offsetting its estimated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Green Mountain's carbon offset donation will balance out the CO2 emissions associated with event activities such as event vehicles, generators, and electricity use.
Green Mountain will also be participating at Party for the Planet, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium's Earth Day celebration with games and information on renewable energy for visitors.
"Green Mountain has impressive experience in eco-friendly sporting events and a genuine interest in getting our community involved to make this year's race the most environmentally friendly race yet," said Adriane Deithorn, Director of Development for the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. "They are helping us calculate the race's carbon footprint – everything from ground transportation to energy use. Green Mountain will then donate carbon offsets to help balance out the CO2 emissions associated with those activities as a way to reduce our environmental impact."
