Passion Parties in the Times Union

Company selling sex products brings women together behind closed doors The women are dressed casually, mostly in jeans and T-shirts. As they munch on chips and sip mimosas from champagne flutes, they chat about their children, their jobs and the places they went to the night before for drinks. From first glance, this appears to be a simple gathering of friends for a Sunday brunch in Schodack. But look a little closer. There's a table in the living room topped with lotions, lingerie and a red satin heart-shaped pillow. When asked their names, the women would rather not say. They don't want their children to know they went there. One mentions she lied to her mother-in-law, saying she was at a Tupperware party.

Catherine Stark stands nearby in a black suit. She wears a gold pin that says, "I Do Those Parties."

"Those parties" refer to in-home sensual-product sales pitches.

Starke is an independent contractor, called a "consultant," for Passion Parties. Founded in 1994, Passion Parties sells products and novelties to women via Internet and in-home parties.

Similar companies include Slumber Parties, Pure Romance Inc. and Edible Ecstasy.
